Do you ever wonder how IN THE WORLD your friend, co-worker, or social media buddy posts at 8 am sharp with something like, “Mornin’! Already ran 7 miles, walked the dog, and made breakfast this morning! Woohoo!”
I mean, really?
That’s insanity.
But it’s POSSIBLE! In fact, once you get in the habit – it’s not only possible, it’s desirable. Yes, there’s such a thing as WANTING to wake up and run; being EXCITED to wake up and run.
At 4:30 am.
Yup.
How?
Here are some tips that I have to get yourself going.
- Set your alarm at the appropriate time. This doesn’t mean set it ridiculously early. In fact, the opposite! If, in order to get to work on time, you need to get started on your run at 6:00 am and you take 30 minutes to get ready, set your alarm for 5:30. Not 4:30. But – ‘I won’t wake up to the first alarm.’ Well, if you already know you don’t need to wake up exactly at the time your alarm goes off, you aren’t going to wake up when your alarm goes off. Simple as that. Then you’re in this cycle of hitting snooze and making it even more difficult to wake up. Plus, you don’t get every ounce of sleep that you can. That hour of hitting snooze (then possibly not even waking up in time at all), you’re still awake. Just set your alarm at the time you know you need to pop out of bed. And do it!
- Set out your running clothes/gear. Have everything ready that you need. Not only will you take less time to get ready and be prepared for your morning run, but waking up knowing that you’ve already invested a little time in ensuring you get up and run will be motivation for actually doing it. I personally set out my clothes, shoes, socks, and my contacts. I always have everything else right by the door (my headphones, headlamp, etc). This helps a TON. Take it up a notch by WEARING your run clothes to sleep! Even if just your run shorts or a sports bra. If you’re dressed the part, you’re more likely to par-take.
- Make plans! For example, meet a friend at 5:30 am sharp for a morning run – you’re less likely to sleep in if someone’s counting on you! This isn’t the only option though. If you’re like me, and don’t know many (if any) people crazy enough to run before the sun comes up, make other plans that motivate you to get your run in before the day starts. Many times, I’ll make lunch or afternoon plans knowing that if I get a run in AT ALL, it will have to be before work. This is a huge motivator, especially if you have a mileage goal, or specific run-goal for that day. If you have other obligations, it’s now or never!
- Get plenty of rest! This one is probably pretty obvious, but it is so important. It also goes along with eating right and doing your best to have an overall healthy lifestyle. If you feel good and are rested, it’s much easier to wake up at ridiculous morning hours. There are nights that I start getting ready for bed at 8:00 pm (seems crazy, I know!) so that I’m asleep by 9:00 pm. This is a tough one to get your mind over – a certain time might seem CRAZY early for bed time, but it’s not crazy if you’re up pushing your limits before the crack of dawn! Quality sleep is important for every aspect of running.
- Make it a routine! Find the tips and tricks that work for YOU, that get YOU going – whatever they may be – and stick with them! Once you get in a routine, it DOES get easier, and as mentioned before – will likely even become your preferred way to start the day! Yes! You will WANT to go to sleep early, you will WANT to wake up and start the day off with something that makes you feel AMAZING. Any other routine you can add in helps. For example, I wake up, feed the pup (she expects breakfast at 4:30 am which helps get me up!), sit on the couch and drink my pre-workout or coffee, scroll through Instagram, then put my contacts in and get my clothes on – and I’m ready to go! I have my run gadgets, Spin/cycle shoes, and Kickboxing gloves right by the door at all times, so I just grab and go. Take the extra steps and be mindful of what it takes to set yourself up for success. Then do it!
What tips/tricks do you have for waking up in the morning? What gets you going?
I love this!

That’s great advice and shows that something so small makes a huge difference! I want to start running more in the mornings so I will definitely be using these tips. 🙂

I’m starting to do my Wednesday runs before work and it really helps me to have everything for the next day packed the night before. Then I can check it to make sure I have everything in the morning instead of running around grabbing (or more likely missing) things.

That’s awesome! That does help a lot! Then you’re not rummaging around in the dark looking for stuff and, like you said, forgetting things! Morning running really can be great when it’s routine or when you do the little things to make it run a little more smoothly. 🙂

I must run in the morning! I absolutely don’t even want to think about running in the afternoon or evening. Now 4:30 am? Only if I’m full marathon training, have a 16-20 miler and it’s going to be super hot and humid.

Oh yeah, it’s so hot now that morning running is practically a must! Of course the time depends on when you need to be at work, responsibilities, etc… Oddly I’ve come to love waking up around 4:30 am… (sometimes) it’s just quiet. Basically the middle of the night. Peaceful, I guess. 🙂

100 % true. I run every morning, get up at 4:20, off at 4:40/45, run for 90-95 minutes. So I’m finished at 6:15 h, enough time to shower and get myself in shape until I have to be off to work at 7:15.

I’m an odd ball. I can switch with the flip of a switch…it’s the going to bed and eating dinner times that go all sorts of crazy for me.

Oh well that’s nice! Yeah, same here…if I do an evening workout class I may not get home until 8, then eat dinner at 8:30… other days I eat dinner at 4:30 if I have nothing going on… whatever works! Sorry your run got rained out this AM! Are they rescheduling?

Great tips! I am currently working on getting my body used to running the morning. I love the feeling over getting my mileage done early while everyone else is still in bed, but I don’t always remember that feeling when the alarm blares!

I totally agree! It can be (really) tough but is totally worth it!!

These are great tips! I never thought I’d become a morning person or morning runner but now I can’t imagine running at any other time. The biggest tip that helped me was having an accountability partner and/or running group! It makes such a difference!!

It’s helped me get to sleep sooner by setting my gadgets on “night mode” which makes the display more warm. I like reading before bed, but the light keeps me wired. Earlier sleep, earlier rise, cooler run!

Hey Ms Texas,
How have you been? Morning running, never could conquer that beast LOL. I hated races because of early start times. Actually, my favorite race was the cooperate challenge due to the fact that it was an evening start! School is going very well. However, it is WORK!!! I now wonder how I encountered so many inept attorneys with such a rigors program. My hope is to become one of those some day :). No doubt that is an accomplishment I should achieve. I tried running a few days last week and now had to miss a week of gym workouts due to back pain. It seems like it is time to fully expect that my running days are over.I ha automatic entry into this years NYC Marathon based on my time last year. Like an idiot I paid the entry fee think that I will be that special person that will run a marathon subsequent to my fusion. In reality, it is the arthritis and not the surgery that is my issue. I just want to get back to the gym as soon as possible! It looks like another week should do it. As time goes by I just miss running so much :(. It is like losing someone that has been with you your whole life.I know I can only make a statement such as this on a running log lol.I know so many people are suffering real problems in the world, and would never compare my situation to theirs. But hey, I do enough for society to whine a little bit lol.Well, I’am so happy you are reaching your full potential as a runner. It also seems like you have embraced the running lifestyle – Nothing better then runners!!! Although my my running days are over, I will always be a runner at heart. One question – Your a gym gal. Why are people so tuned into the music. No one chats on the machine next to you.I got so annoyed last month that I actually pulled the plugs out of my gym partners ears and demanded that she talk to me !!! As it turned out she had a few choice words for me lol.
Stay well – run safe and leave those ducks aline this summer :).

Hey Joey! I’m great! I’ve been in Colorado with no cell service! Believe it or not, I survived! 🙂 really though, it was amazing. Love the mountains. I’m glad you’re focusing on school and the gym… you’ll always be a runner no matter what. And lol at talking at the gym. I’m actually not a gym gal – I hate the gym!! BUT when I do drag myself there I do not want to talk to people, lol. It’s time to jam out and get work done! It’s not social hour… do you bring cocktails too?:) I have to give you a hard time… it’s been too long since I’ve heard from you! Glad to hear you’re doing well. I’ll stay away from the ducks if you stop harassing people at the gym 🙂 take it easy and don’t push it… heal up! 😉

No cell, the horror lol. The best part of being born in 1977 was the pleasure of living 18 years of my life without being connected to the world :). It sounds like you had a beautiful vacation, and did some great running. BTW – I considered your proposition of you staying away from the ducks if I stop harassing peeps at the gym. Well,I guess those ducks are in for a very difficult summer :). And I almost choked on my coffee when I read “It’s been too long since you heard from me LOL. You blocked me half the time I was on Twitter LOL :). We are taking a 3 week vacation at the end of July to visit my sister in Berlin ( School teacher there ), then hit Prague, Paris, and London. The break is needed. It does seem strange to have planned a trip that did not require me to map out running routes. Oh well, Hotel Gyms and lots of walking will be done. And of course you have to give me a hard time. If you didn’t I would lose respect for you LOL :).
Thanks for making me smile :). Have a GREAT SUMMER – And as always run safe my friend.
